Great clients

The Story so far

It all started
with a passion for craft.

After honing his skills at Aardman, animator Dan Richards set out to build something of his own; an animation studio dedicated to the art of stop-motion storytelling.

In 2007, A+C was born.

From our first commercial project to working with some of the world’s biggest brands, we’ve grown into one of the UK’s leading stop-motion studios.

But we’re not here
to stand still.

In 2023, we expanded our team, our studios and our ambition – scaling up to take on bigger, bolder projects while staying true to our craft.

And the next chapter is already in motion.

Today, we handle everything in-house to deliver world-class work with precision and pace.

So forget the idea stop-motion takes forever. Let’s create the unforgettable.

Got Questions?

We understand that not everyone has created stop-motion before, so our team have put together a list of helpful FAQs. Think there’s something missing? Feel free to reach out!

  • What is stop-motion animation? More

Stop-motion is a frame-by-frame animation technique that brings physical objects to life. Each frame is carefully captured, with tiny movements between shots, creating smooth, handcrafted motion when played back.

  • How long does stop-motion take? More

It depends on the project, but every second of stop-motion requires 25 individual frames. A 30-second ad means capturing 750 frames, with animators typically producing between 2 and 10 seconds of animation per day. Want a deeper dive? Check out our blog.

  • How much does stop-motion cost? More

There’s a myth that stop-motion is more expensive than CG animation, but that’s not true. Costs depend on factors like character builds, sets, and complexity, but stop-motion sits in the same budget range as other animation forms. Tabletop animations (like food or product shots) are more cost-effective than full-character productions.

  • What’s the difference between Claymation and stop-motion? More

Claymation is a type of stop-motion using plasticine or clay characters; think Wallace & Gromit. It’s one of the many styles we create at A+C.

  • When should you come to A+C with an idea? More

Anytime! Whether you’ve got a full script, some sketches, or just a rough idea, we’re here to help shape it into something incredible.

  • Does A+C handle post-production? More

Yes. We’re a full-service production studio, meaning we handle everything in-house, from animation to editing, grading, VFX, and compositing.

  • Can you make changes after the stop-motion shoot? More

Absolutely. We can adjust framing, shot order, and timing in the edit, just like live action. Our post team can color-correct, enhance shots, and add VFX layers where needed. While stop-motion has key approval stages, pick-ups are much quicker and more cost-effective than in CG or live action.

  • Who owns the IP for A+C projects? More

We usually grant full IP ownership of characters we create for our clients. If those characters are used for future stop-motion campaigns, we simply ask for first refusal on production.

  • Can you hire A+C’s studio space? More

Yep, our Margate-based studios are available for stop-motion, live-action, photography, and post-production. Whether you need a single studio or the entire building, we’ve got you covered. Get in touch to find out more.

  • Is there parking at the Old Laundry? More

There is. We have on-site parking plus an electric vehicle charging station for visitors.
