Stop-motion post production

A+C’s services aren’t just limited to stop-motion. With our over 10 years of extensive experience in post production we are able to work with our inhouse team to edit, grade and composite all content here at our studios.

With our inhouse facilities, productions are made easier as you don’t need to use multiple suppliers. Here at the Old Laundry we have two editing suites, one with sound recording facilities, fully kitted studio spaces, digital suites, triple screen setup and access to full Adobe packages.

Once the animation has been completed, the final stage left to complete is the process of post-production. A rough edit of all the animated shots is put together, to give the client an idea of what the film will look like once it is finished.

To create the magic of stop-motion, quite often an animator will use support rigging to enable items to fly by themselves or transform.

This rigging is usually visible and will be captured in-frame during the shoot, so will need removing during the ‘clean-up’ stage of post-production. This involves compositors digitally painting out the rigs frame-by-frame to create the illusion of a prop or character being airborne or balanced unassisted.

At this point, other visual effects (VFX) can be added, such as character facial animation and elements like holograms, rain, fire, or smoke effects. All of these processes really help bring another layer of life to the stop-motion animation. The amount of clean-up and VFX required on a project varies but can be sped up by multiple digital artists working at once.

Once the visual effects have been completed and signed off by the agency and client, an editor will begin cutting together the shots of the commercial. This is a part which differs from live-action production as it is very rare to have multiple versions of a take to choose from or multiple camera angles to work with.

When editing stop-motion, we normally use over 95% of shot footage, so we don’t normally expect a lengthy edit session selecting takes.

During the edit it is commonplace for titles, voiceover, music, sound effects (SFX) and subtitles to be added. These can be completed by the production company or a post house production partner.

After post-production is finished, all that is left to do is send the finished film to the client ready for it to be released. The process of creating a stop-motion advertisement from start to finish is always a joy.

Getting the opportunity to bring a company’s vision to life is always a dream for any animation studio.

It’s a chance to create short form animations that really have the opportunity to express some unique ideas.
